Meeting with the experts in Digital Humanities

Wednesday - 30/05/2018 04:10
On May 28th, 2018, Prof. Dr Pham Quang Minh (USSH's Rector) and representatives of USSH's Faculty of Literature, Faculty of Information and Library, and Office for Cooperation and Development welcomed and worked with a group of experts in "digital humanities" (DH) from Tokyo University (Japan), Cornell University and Columbia University (US) to discuss about the development of a DH project in Vietnam.

On behalf of USSH, Prof. Dr Pham Quang Minh shared about the strong development of Vietnam National University with a long history and diversity given its 7 member universities and broad international relations, making it the best university in Vietnam and one of the 200 best universities in Asia. The Rector also discussed with the experts about Vietnam's higher education system from the Temple of Literature to the public-private system today, which still faces difficulties in internationalization. Therefore, investments in digitalized education to connect with international universities is crucial.

Sharing the same idea about connecting universities in digitalizing data, the experts hoped to cooperate with USSH, the leading Vietnamese university in the humanities, to implement this project. The combination between digital technology and the humanities is especially new in Vietnam. Based on the spirit of cooperation and learning, the experts and USSH's staff had discussions about the name, time, and contents of an upcoming conference concerning digitalizing humanities-related data. Information about digitalized data should help big universities in the world create an educational network, the humanities to learn from each other, and students to access in-depth sources and materials in the world.

In response, Prof. Dr Pham Quang Minh believed that in 2019, with the support from relevant faculties of USSH, the DH experts from the big universities of Japan and the US will be able to hold a successful conference to share digitalized knowledge and data on the humanities. To begin with, the relevant faculties would form a group of scholars to support and discuss with the experts on necessary procedures and publicization of this conference.
